Many forecasters stayed at the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo to wait for the first blossoms to appear there. Cherry blossoms are an integral part of Japanese culture. The blossom, which is very delicate, lasts only for a week or so. The transient nature of the flower is treasured by the Japanese as a reminder of how fragile life is. As the first blossoms begin to appear in Tokyo, they will be in full bloom after a week’s time. Many anticipate the transition into full bloom of the blossoms as regular parks become huge picnic areas for families and friends. With some taking advantage of the shade it gives to have rowdy, oftentimes alcohol-accompanied parties that lasts for hours. While the western part of Japan has already began seeing the cherry blossoms bloom, the northern region won’t see their flowers until late May.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February fell 0.1 point from the previous month to 3.6 percent, the lowest since July 2007, the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry said Friday.
It was the first improvement in two months, but the number of new job offers nationwide, a leading indicator of employment, sagged 2.9 percent to 840,000.

In February, both people looking for jobs and job openings declined. A labor ministry official said the falls were apparently caused by the heavy snowy weather that month .The internal affairs ministry said the number of people at work rose 130,000 from the previous month to 63.32 million, while the ranks of the jobless fell 90,000 to 2.33 million.
The jobless rate for people aged 15 to 24 meanwhile fell 0.7 point to 5.8 percent.The jobs-to-seekers ratio represents the number of effective job offers per person seeking jobs. New job offers rose from the manufacturing and service industries, including temporary staffing agencies, but fell among education service providers.
The ratio was highest at 1.53 in Aichi Prefecture and lowest in Okinawa at 0.62.
LONDON – The only surviving Gurkha to hold the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest military honor, told lawmakers he was “shocked” that the Nepalese warriors are being treated as “third-class soldiers.”
Capt. Rambahadur Limbu, 74, spoke Wednesday to an inquiry examining Gurkhas’ welfare grievances, including appeals for equal pay, pension and facilities as their comrades in the British Army.
“Where is the debt of honor that this country owes to the Gurkhas?” he asked.

The National Police Agency said Thursday that the number of foreigners arrested on suspicion of committing crimes totaled 9,884 in 2013, an increase of 8% over 2012, and the first increase in nine years.
According to NPA figures, criminal charges were filed against foreigners in 15,419 cases, NTV reported. Of the 9,884 arrests, Chinese accounted for the most with 4,047, followed by Vietnamese (1,118) and South Koreans (936).
The NPA also noted that in the case of Vietnamese offenders, shoplifting was the main offense, with charges being filed in 549 cases last year, NTV reported.
The figures do not includes arrests of foreigners with permanent residency status and members of the U.S. military stationed in Japan.

Many of you have probably heard of the Great Buddha (Daibutsu) of Kamakura and Todai-ji in Nara, but did you know that there is a third Great Buddha in Japan?
Called the Gifu Shohoji Daibutsu (Great Buddha of Gifu) it can be found in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture and is truly impressive. Located a short distance from Gifu Park, the Great Buddha is housed in the Hall of the Great Buddha at Shoho-ji Temple. The hall stands out in the distance with its high roof and unique design. The architecture of the building has a mixture of Chinese and Japanese influences.
The Great Buddha was conceived by the then head priest of Kinpouzan Shoho-ji Temple, Ichyuu in around 1790. Ichyuu admired the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple in Nara, and wanted to build a large image of Shaka Nyorai (Great Buddha) in hope of appeasing the gods and averting earthquakes and famines. Ichyuu unfortunately died in 1815 before its completion, but it was completed by his successor in 1832. The Great Buddha took a total of 38 years to construct and is one of the Great Buddha structures in Japan, along with the ones mentioned earlier in Kamakura and Nara.
The Great Buddha of Gifu is very unique due to its method of construction. A central pillar of 1.8 meters in circumference was used made from ginkgo tree wood. The shape of the Buddha was formed using bamboo lattices, which were then covered in clay to add shape and form a mould. Buddhist scriptures were added to the clay, kind of like a paper mache. The head priest, Ichyuu spent years travelling around Japan gathering the scriptures.
The scriptures were then covered in lacquer and gold leaf to complete the appearance. It is the largest statue in Japan constructed by this method, and has been given the nickname “Basket Buddha”, due to the bamboo framework used in its construction, which resemble a basket. Inside the Great Buddha is a statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of Medicine.
The north and south walls of the hall are lined with 500 statues of Buddha’s disciples. Each one is distinctively unique and has a different expression, clothing and pose. No two are alike and I easily spent a good amount of time checking them all out, as they were that interesting! Above the statues are some fascinating dioramic paintings.
At the entrance of the hall is a wooden statue of Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha. Legend has it that the statue can cure any aliment. Simply rub the part of the Buddha that is causing you pain and you will obtain relief. Having a broken ring finger, I naturally had to rub the Buddha’s right ring finger in hope that it would help. I did after all have a good reason for visiting this place, right?
The Great Buddha is certainly lucky that is for sure, or maybe it was Buddha’s divine power as it has managed to survive a major earthquake that levelled the city, as well as the devastating air raids of World War 2 that flattened the whole area. Today it remains an icon of the city and a must see sight in Central Japan.
